Saturday mornings: teaching kids 8 - 12 years old how to create programs
Responsible to the CEO for all aspects of Software Development in this startup which aimed to supply software to the Fashion industry.
I initially joined a startup company called Microcellular Systems, where we created a software team which developed software such as GSM subscriber management. This development team was a significant part of the reason why Microcellular was acquired by interWAVE. On joining interWAVE I was responsible for transfer of the development of their OMC (Operations and Maintenance Centre) from Silicon Valley to Tralee, and then for all aspects of development in Tralee and for integration with other teams in America and China.
I took a number of medium term contracts with NTDI. This involved helping a number of mentally- and physically-challenged people to gain as much aid as possible from computers, either to help them re-train for employment, or sometimes just to get on with their life. In many ways this was the most rewarding position I have so far undertaken.
Flextime offered a Windows-based system which helped HR Departments to offer flexi-time to employees. CSO bought the system, but they used VAX computers rather than PCs. I developed a VAX-based system which made the Flextime data available to CSO personnel. The system was initially developed as a 6 month contract, but that was extended by a long series of short term contracts over many years.
Developed and delivered a range of courses from 1-week commercial training, up to a 2-year City & Guilds certified Software Engineering course (which we introduced).
I am responsible to the COO for all SCM functions, building many applications from world-wide development teams on a variety of platforms, installation and integration of this software, and releasing it to System Test and customers. And I do some coding whenever I get time
